Classic Standby: Old Ebbitt Grill
/If you are looking for the classic Washington DC look and feel while eating an excellent meal, Old Ebbitt Grill remains the champ. It is Washington DC’s oldest bar and restaurant, recognizing itself in some form or fashion since it was part of the Ebbitt House, where the saloon opened in the 1850s. It has been in it’s current location in 1986, and over the past three and a half decades, it has built a reputation for itself for good service and quality food, where you might run into politicians discussing the headlines of tomorrow. For example, during Iran-Contra in the 1980s, it was the site where documents smuggled out of the White House discussing the scheme were viewed by high-ranking justice department officials.
Only closed at Christmas, the 567 seat restaurant aims to be everything for everyone; starting with breakfast and ending with the bar closing at last call. It is known for it’s classic American and seafood cuisines, and is a noted location for it’s raw bar and for oysters.
