The Urban Atlas' Top Washington DC Activities for August 2017

For travelers and tourists coming to Washington DC in August, the team here at Urban Atlas has tried to identify a couple of events and activities that would be worth checking out. In August, the highlights are:

Jazz in the Garden
CC: Rukasu1

CC: Rukasu1

Fridays, 5 PM - 8:30 PM, August 4, 11, 18, 25

Jazz in the Garden is a DC ritual and a unique opportunity to enjoy the National Mall. Every Friday during the summer - from May 19th through August 25th, the National Gallery of Art (NGA) hosts a free jazz concert in its Sculpture Garden. It's a great opportunity to take advantage of the (sometimes) enjoyable DC summer evenings. It also may be the only time to (legally) enjoy alcoholic beverages on the National Mall - available for purchase at the Pavilion Café. You can also bring your own food or purchase some at the Café. Be sure to get there early - it can get very crowded if you don't arrive early to carve out your own spot.

DC Beer Week

Sunday August 20 through Sunday August 27.

The Washington DC beer scene has undergone an amazing transition. In 2011, DC Brau launched the first production brewery in the District of Columbia since 1956. DC now has 5 production breweries, as well as numerous brewpubs, as well as many counterparts in the nearby Maryland and Virginia suburbs. DC Beer Week is 8 days of events, many centering around DC beers, as well as other out of town beers. A couple of notable events:

The Washington DC Total Tap Takeover, Thursday, August 24, 4 PM - 10 PM, Churchkey: If you enjoy trying locally brewed beers, but don't have time to get to each of the DC breweries, let them come to you! 55 beers on tap, all brewed in the District of Columbia. Churchkey is closest to McPherson Square Station (Orange, Silver, and Blue lines).

For a true DC/Maryland experience, there are events headlined by DC breweries combining DC beer and Maryland crab: DC Brau's Genuine 6th Annual Crabfest Monumental Extravaganza and the 3 Stars Crab Feast @ Brookland Pint.

Tickets to DC Brau event: Wednesday, August 23rd, tickets are $50. Quarterdeck is in Arlington, closest to the Rosslyn Metro Station (Orange, Silver, and Blue lines).

Tickets to 3 Stars event: Saturday, August 26th, tickets are $55. Brookland Pint is located convenient near the Brookland Metro Station (Red line).
