The Urban Atlas' Top Washington DC Activities for December 2017

For travelers and tourists coming to DC each month, the team here at Urban Atlas has culled through all of the events to identify a couple of events and activities worth checking out. In December, the highlights are:

One of the best ways to spend a December afternoon or evening is to partake in a Christmas Market. While markets on this side of the Atlantic don't quite live up to the originals in Europe, they do provide plenty of entertainment for the day. There are a few notable markets in DC - the first is the free Downtown Holiday Market - which is in Penn Quarter/Chinatown and runs from Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve.  A good place to wander around, scout out potential holiday gifts at 60 rotating exhibitors including crafts, jewelry, pottery, clothing, and specialty food items. The second and more traditional market is the Christkindlmarkt which aims to recreate a traditional German public Christmas market at the Heurich House Museum; it features more than 40 local artisans as well as food and alcohol. Another great option is the House of Sweden's Christmas Bazaar where you can get Swedish and Nordic goods including warm woolens, glass, textiles and gnome-related crafts while the cafe sells pastries, coffee and mulled wine.

Downtown Holiday Market, F Street between 7th & 9th streets NW.

Christkindlmarkt, Heurich House Museum, 1307 New Hampshire Ave NW.

House of Sweden Christmas Bazaar, 2900 K St NW.

Holiday pop-up bars

Pop-up bars are starting to catch on in DC, and where there was once one celebrating the holidays in DC, there are now two. For the third year, the Miracle on Seventh Street takes over the space that was the Game of Thrones bar, PUB Dread, among others.   There are 5 separate rooms including a snowy winter wonderland,  a gingerbread house, and a non-Christmas themed Chinese and a Movie room. Dress warmly and expect to wait in long lines to get in. For the first year, for the month of December the bar Ivy and Coney transforms into Chai-vy and Cohen-y an irreverent Hanukkah-themed bar which includes a menu featuring potato latkes and schnapps. They also will have dreidel competitions and the ShotNorah, a menorah that would allow nine people to take shots of Manischewitz or Slivovitz.

Miracle on Seventh Street, 1843 7th St NW, through December 31st.

Chai-vy and Cohen-y, 1537 7th St NW, through December 31st.
